They were first introduced by occupational therapists as a treatment for behavioral disorders but are now more mainstream for anyone who wants to relax. Experts refer to it as “deep-pressure therapy:” The idea is that the pressure from the blanket can increase serotonin, a chemical in the body that makes you feel happy and calm. It’s not intended to cure any medical conditions, but it’s become a popular way for insomniacs, people dealing with anxiety and self-proclaimed “bad sleepers” to get some shut-eye.

Do weighted blankets really work?
Yes; experts report there are real benefits to using a weighted blanket. “There is recent research suggesting they can help reduce or relieve anxiety,” says Christine Rocchio Mueller, occupational therapist at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. Rocchio Mueller also says they can help people who may not consider themselves anxious, yet still experience insomnia or sleep disturbances: “A weighted blanket might provide just enough physiological calm that it helps them relax to fall asleep.” Many users describe the sensation of lying under a weighted blanket as feeling like a hug.

“It is one of the most natural things to reach and hug a family member or friend when they are upset or anxious,” according to Rocchio Mueller. “While a hug might not solve all your problems, it often helps you feel better by calming your body, which then allows you to think a little bit clearer.”

What to look for when shopping for the best weighted blanket
These are the most important details to consider when choosing the right blanket for you:

✔️ Outer material: Because the outer material is what you’ll feel on your skin, it’s important that you like the fabric’s feel. Polyester fleece is a popular option for the outer cover, as it’s soft and cozy, but some brands use cotton for a more natural feel.

✔️ Filling: Weighted blankets are usually filled with tiny glass or plastic beads to provide pressure. Glass beads are the most popular filling because they’re denser than plastic. GH Institute analysts recommend looking for grid-like stitching that helps keep the fill evenly distributed. Some weighted blankets use cotton or down alternative polyester filling too, especially knit designs.

✔️ Size: Avoid oversize options. The blanket shouldn’t hang off the side of your bed: The weight can make it fall off during the night. Also, a larger size means the weight is more spread out, so you’ll feel less pressure. Even if you have a larger bed, you may want to use a twin- or individual-size weighted blanket.

✔️ Laundering instructions: Check the care label to ensure you’ll be able to keep it clean easily. Some weighted blankets are spot-clean only, but many feature a removable, machine washable cover. A few styles are even entirely machine washable. GH Institute pros note that it usually takes weighted blankets longer to dry after washing.

A note of caution: Weighted blankets shouldn’t be used by anyone who can’t move freely beneath the weight. Even though they’re sometimes used as a therapeutic tool for children, it’s important to speak with a child’s pediatrician first, before trying it out.

How heavy should a weighted blanket be?
For adults, the blankets themselves are heavy, but not so heavy that you’ll feel like you’re being crushed underneath them. To find the best weight for you, you’ll need to do some basic math. Most manufacturers recommend choosing a weighted blanket that’s roughly 10% of your body weight. So if you weigh around 70 kg, a 6 to 7 kg blanket is ideal. Don’t worry about hitting the exact number; within the 7% to 12% range is considered good.
